Friends and Friendship

We may have friends, or only a few. Some are acquaintances and some are best friends. For us, a friend is someone we can hang out with but in the bible, it has a lot to say about friendship, but it’s different from what we think.

One of the best examples of friendship is David and Jonathan. They were more than a brother, in fact closer than a brother. According to the bible, commitment is the word that implies the real meaning of friendship. In Psalm 119:63 it says, “I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts.” Friends tell you the truth even at the risk of hurting your feelings. Friends should have fear with God. In Prov. 28:28; “The fear of the Lord – that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding” Friends will love you still even if you came from the clan of enemy, just like Jonathan. He is the son of David’s enemy and Jonathan became his loyal friend. “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you” (I Sam 20:4). Jonathan takes a risk for his own life to save David’s life. The value of friends is one of the most important things in a person’s life:  Their worth are not diminished by time, not devalued by inflation, not worn out by use, but like a fine wine, they improve with time; Proverbs 27:9.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
